3 Developing a Growth Mind-set

A growth mind-set is an important quality for trainees, workers, and professionals. It means believing that our abilities, knowledge, and skills can improve through learning, practice, effort, and experience. A person with a growth mind-set does not think, “I am not good at this.” Instead, the person thinks, “I am not good at this yet, but I can improve.”

In today’s world, technology and workplaces are changing very quickly. New machines, software, tools, and working methods are introduced regularly. Therefore, trainees and workers need to keep learning throughout their lives. Developing a growth mind-set helps them face these changes with confidence.

What is a Growth Mind-set?

A growth mind-set is the belief that intelligence and abilities are not completely fixed. People can develop their skills through continuous effort and learning.

For example, an ITI student may find electrical wiring difficult in the beginning. A student with a fixed mind-set may say, “Electrical work is not for me.” A trainee with a growth mind-set may say, “I am finding this difficult now, but if I practice more and learn from my instructor, I can become better.”

This small change in thinking can make a big difference in a person's career.

Growth Mind-set and Learning

Learning is a continuous process. Nobody knows everything. Trainees should not be afraid of making mistakes or asking questions. Mistakes are a natural part of learning.

For example, if a trainee makes an error while operating a machine, the trainee should try to understand what went wrong. The instructor can explain the correct method, and the trainee can practice again. In this way, the mistake becomes a learning opportunity.

A growth mind-set encourages trainees to ask questions, accept feedback, practice regularly, and try again after failure.

Accept Challenges

People with a growth mind-set do not always choose easy tasks. They are willing to accept challenges because challenges help them learn new skills.

ITI trainees may face difficult practical assignments, technical problems, examinations, or new technologies. Instead of avoiding these challenges, they should take them as opportunities to improve.

A difficult task may not be successful on the first attempt. However, every attempt provides experience and knowledge.

Learn from Failure

Failure does not mean the end of success. It can be a step towards success. Many successful people have faced failure before achieving their goals.

Trainees should learn to ask themselves:

* What went wrong?

* What can I learn from this experience?

* What should I do differently next time?

* Who can help me improve?

These questions help trainees turn failure into learning.

Accept Feedback

Feedback is very important for developing a growth mind-set. Instructors, trainers, supervisors, and colleagues can identify mistakes that a person may not notice.

Trainees should not take constructive feedback as an insult. Instead, they should use it to improve their performance.

For example, if an instructor tells a trainee that the work is not accurate, the trainee should listen carefully, understand the problem, and try to correct it. Accepting feedback shows a willingness to learn.

Practice Regularly

Practice is one of the most important ways to develop skills. Reading about a skill is useful, but practical experience makes the skill stronger.

ITI trainees should regularly practice their trade skills. They should repeat difficult activities until they become more confident and accurate.

The same principle applies to employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, computer skills, and time management.

Use Positive Language

The words we use can influence our thinking. Instead of saying:

“I cannot do this.”

Say:

“I cannot do this yet.”

Instead of:

“I am bad at computers.”

Say:

“I need more practice with computers.”

Instead of:

“I failed.”

Say:

“I learned what I need to improve.”

Positive language helps create confidence and encourages continuous effort.

A growth mind-set is an important employability skill for the modern workplace. It teaches us that our abilities can improve through effort, practice, learning, and feedback.

Developing a growth mind-set can help you become better technicians, employees, entrepreneurs, and lifelong learners. you should not be afraid of challenges or failure. Instead, you should keep learning, practicing, improving, and trying again.

The most important idea is simple: “we may not be able to do everything today, but with the right effort and attitude, we can become better tomorrow.”
