7 Setting Goals & Building a Plan

Setting Goals & Building a Plan

Introduction

Every person has dreams for the future. An ITI trainee may want to get a good job, become a skilled technician, start a business, or continue higher education. But having a dream is not enough. We need to “set clear goals and make a proper plan” to achieve them.

“Goal setting” means deciding what we want to achieve. “Planning” means deciding how, when, and what steps we will take to achieve that goal.

For ITI trainees, goal setting and planning are important employability skills. They help trainees use their time properly, improve their skills, and prepare for a successful career.

1. What is a Goal?

A goal is something that we want to achieve in the future.

Examples:

  •     Get a job after completing ITI.
  •     Improve practical skills.
  •     Learn computer skills.
  •     Get an apprenticeship.
  •     Pass a competitive examination.
  •     Start a small business.
  •     Become a supervisor or skilled technician.

A good goal should be “clear and realistic”.

2. Why is Goal Setting Important?

Setting goals gives us direction.

Benefits of setting goals:

  1. “Provides direction” – We know what we want to achieve.
  2. “Increases motivation” – A clear goal encourages us to work harder.
  3. “Improves focus” – We can concentrate on important activities.
  4. “Saves time” – We avoid unnecessary activities.
  5. “Builds confidence” – Achieving small goals increases confidence.
  6. “Helps measure progress” – We can check how much we have improved.
  7. “Prepares us for employment” – Clear career goals help us prepare for suitable jobs.

3. Short-Term and Long-Term Goals

Goals can be divided into different types.

Short-Term Goals

These are goals that can be achieved in a short period.

Examples:

  •     Complete a practical assignment this week.
  •     Improve communication skills in one month.
  •     Learn MS Excel in three months.
  •     Prepare a good resume.

Long-Term Goals

These goals may take several months or years.

Examples:

  •     Get a job in a good company.
  •     Become an expert technician.
  •     Start your own workshop.
  •     Become a supervisor.
  •     Complete higher technical education.

It is useful to have both short-term and long-term goals.

4. Set SMART Goals

  • A useful method for setting goals is the “SMART method”.
  • S – Specific: The goal should be clear.
  • M – Measurable: We should be able to measure progress.
  • A – Achievable: The goal should be possible to achieve.
  • R – Relevant: The goal should be useful for our career.
  • T – Time-bound: The goal should have a deadline.

5. Understand Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Before making a plan, trainees should understand themselves.

Ask yourself:

  •     What am I good at?
  •     Which technical skills do I have?
  •     Which skills do I need to improve?
  •     How good are my communication skills?
  •     Do I manage my time properly?
  •     What type of job interests me?
  •     What additional skills are required for that job?

Knowing your strengths and weaknesses helps you make a better career plan.

6. Break a Big Goal into Small Steps

A large goal can sometimes look difficult. The best method is to divide it into smaller tasks.

Example: Goal – Get a job in a good company

You can divide it into these steps:

  1.  Complete ITI training successfully.
  2.  Improve practical skills.
  3.  Improve communication skills.
  4.  Prepare a professional resume.
  5.  Learn basic computer skills.
  6.  Search for suitable job opportunities.
  7.  Prepare for interviews.
  8.  Attend job interviews.
  9.  Learn from interview feedback.
  10.  Continue improving until you get the right opportunity.

Small steps make a big goal easier to achieve.

What is Planning?

Planning is the process of deciding what we want to achieve, what steps we need to take, when we will do them, and what resources we need to achieve a goal.

1. Make a Daily and Weekly Plan

Planning your daily activities can improve productivity.

Daily Plan:

  •     Attend ITI classes regularly.
  •     Practice technical skills.
  •     Read or study for some time.
  •     Practice communication.
  •     Learn one new thing.
  •     Review the day's work.

Weekly Plan:

2. Give Priority to Important Work

Not every activity is equally important.

Trainees should learn to identify:

  •     Urgent and important work
  •     Important but not urgent work
  •     Less important work

3. Take Action

A plan is useful only when we follow it.

Many people make plans but do not take action. Successful people convert their plans into daily activities.

Remember:

Goal → Plan → Action → Review → Improvement → Success

Take one small step every day toward your goal.

4. Review Your Progress

Reviewing your progress helps you understand whether your plan is working.

At the end of each week, ask:

  •     What did I achieve?
  •     What did I not complete?
  •     What problems did I face?
  •     What can I improve?
  •     What should I do next week?

If necessary, change your plan. Changing a plan does not mean failure. It means learning and improving.

5. Avoid Common Problems

Trainees may face some difficulties while achieving their goals.

Common problems:

  •     Lack of motivation
  •     Poor time management
  •     Procrastination
  •     Fear of failure
  •     Too much use of mobile phones
  •     Lack of confidence
  •     Unclear goals
  •     Giving up too early

How to overcome them:

  •     Set small and achievable goals.
  •     Follow a daily routine.
  •     Avoid unnecessary distractions.
  •     Stay positive.
  •     Learn from mistakes.
  •     Take advice from instructors and experienced people.
  •     Keep improving your skills.

Setting goals and building a plan are important employability skills for every ITI trainee. A clear goal gives us direction, while a good plan shows us the way to reach that goal.

Trainees should set “SMART goals”, divide big goals into small steps, manage their time, take regular action, and review their progress. They should not be afraid of mistakes or failure. Every mistake can provide a learning opportunity.
